Outstanding writers from Chaco delight us with books which narrate stories, customs and legends from our region. Perhaps today's favourite (the favorite of kids including my daughter) is Hugo Mitoire with his tales of terror "for brave kids from 8 years old", as indicated in one of his works. Thanks to his tales, we sometimes receive the "visit" of our kids at night, who move to our bedroom as they can't sleep after reading them.
Here is my modest translation of an excerpt taken from the author's blog:
Prestigiosos escritores del Chaco nos deleitan con sus publicaciones que narran historias, costumbres y leyendas de nuestra zona. Quizás hoy día, el favorito de los chicos (incluida mi hija) es Hugo Mitoire, con sus Cuentos de terror "para niños valientes a partir de los 8 años" como lo indicara en alguna de sus obras, gracias a las cuales nuestra hijos nos "visitan" en el dormitorio por la noches cuando no pueden conciliar el sueño después de haber leído algunas de sus historias.

El destino del Sr. Sanabria (Fragmento).
Mr. Sanabria’s fate (Excerpt).
Como cada lunes, desde hacía miles de años, ese lunes ocho de abril de mil novecientos sesenta y ocho, se reunieron Dios, El Diablo y La Muerte, para decidir –entre otros asuntos- la hora fatal del señor Rodolfo Sanabria.
As every Monday for thousands of years, that Monday, April 8th, 1968, God, the Devil and The Death met to decide, among other matters, the fatal hour of Rodolfo Sanabria.
El hombre de treinta y ocho años, con un buen trabajo y excelente estado de salud, jamás podría haber imaginado que ese día fresquito y soleado, y a esa hora –casi las ocho de la mañana- en que se dirigía a su trabajo pedaleando tranquilamente su bicicleta balona, los tres seres ultraterrenales más poderosos del universo, estaban discutiendo sobre la finalización de su vida material.
The 38-year-old man with a good job and excellent health, could have never imagined that precisely by that time, nearly 8.00 o’clock in the morning of a cool and sunny day and just when he was peacefully pedaling his “Balona” bike to work, the three most powerful ultraterrestrial beings in the universe were discussing the end of his material life.
-Debemos hacerlo yá –dijo El Diablo.
“We have to do it right now”, said the Devil.
-¿Porqué tanto apuro? –preguntó Dios.
“Why the rush ?”, asked God.
-Algún día debe morir, entonces mejor que muera ahora y Sanseacabó –respondió.
“He must die one day. So, better to die now and that’s that”, he replied
-¿Usted que opina? –preguntó Dios a La Muerte.
“What do you think about this?, God asked the Death.
-Me da lo mismo. Cuando lo decidan yo haré mi trabajo –respondió impasible.
“I don’t care. When you make the decision I'll do my job”, she said impassively.
-Necesito gente en las profundidades, y me vendría bien llevármelo ahora –fundamentó El Diablo.
“I need people in the depths, and it may be good to take him now”, said the Devil.
-Porqué no esperamos un poco… aunque sea hasta el domingo. Ese día la gente está más preparada para una muerte y…
“Why don’t we wait a little ... at least until Sunday. That day people are more prepared for a death and ...”
-No, no. Por favor no me vengan a recargar de trabajo el domingo. Ya saben que ese día trabajo las veinticuatro horas sin descanso, así que les pediría que se decidieran por cualquier otro día de la semana –habló La Muerte.
“No, no. Don’t recharge work on Sunday, please. You know that day I work tirelessly around the clock, so I ask you to choose another day of the week”, spoke the Death.
-¿Vio Mi Señor?, no la recarguemos de trabajo a la señora –dijo El Diablo.
“Did you see my Lord ? Don’t overload the lady with work”,
said the Devil.
-Que yo sepa es un hombre bueno y trabajador, honesto y no veo la necesidad de… -comenzó a argumentar Dios, tratando de prolongar la vida de Sanabria.
“ As far as I know, he is a good, honest and hard-working man and I don’t really see why there is a need to …”, argued God trying to extend Sanabria’s life.
-Y si le digo que no iba a la iglesia ni rezaba, ¿que me dice? –atacó El Diablo.
“And if I tell you that he neither attended to church nor prayed, what do you say?, attacked the Devil.
-Bueno, eso no lo convierte en una persona mala –se defendió y defendió de paso al terrenal Sanabria.
"Well, that doesn’t make him a bad person”, replied God defending himself and Sanabrias’s steps in his earthly life.
-Jamás creyó en usted, ni en ningún santo, vírgenes o ángeles ¿qué me dice ahora? –volvió a atacar el Príncipe de las Tinieblas, tratando de ofuscar a Dios.
"He never believed in you, or any saint, virgins or angels. What do you say now?, attacked the Prince of Darkness again, trying to bewilder God.
-Bueno, lo más importante es lo que era… ejem, cof, cof - – tosió y carraspeó Dios- digo… lo importante es lo que es. Eso es lo que vale, que es una persona buena y…
“Well, the most important thing is what he was ..., ahem, cough, cough “, said God, clearing his throat. “What really matters is what he is. That is what counts, that he is a good person and ..."
-Tampoco crea que era un angelito ¿eh? Lo he visto en muchos bailes conquistando mujeres. Varias veces se emborrachó. Le gusta jugar al truco y a la loba.
“Don´t even think that he was a good angel, huh. I've seen him in many parties conquering women. He got drunk several times and he is also fond of playing card games like truco and loba. “
-Bueno… los hombres también necesitan divertirse y alegrar el espíritu…
“Well ... men also need to have fun and brighten up the spirit ...”
-Ahá. Le doy un dato más Mi Señor: se casó y se separó. ¿Qué opina ahora del hereje del señor Sanabria?
“Aha. I’ll give you more information My Lord: he got married and then he got divorced. What’s your opinion now about the heretic Mr. Sanabria?"
-¡Basta de chismes! ¡Me tiene harto con las habladurías! ¡Si se lo quiere llevar, lléveselo! pero le advierto que en menos de un mes, si no lo envía al Cielo, voy a buscarlo personalmente y haré tronar el escarmiento en las profundidades. Es un hombre bueno y debe estar conmigo.
“Stop gossiping! I got fed up with the gossip! If you want to take him, do it! But I warn you that if you don’t send him to heaven in less than a month, I will personally go for him and the punishment will roar in the depths. He is a good man and deserves to be with me."
El Diablo se frotó las manos, loco de alegría, mientras Dios se rascaba la barba pensativo y malhumorado. La Muerte, con una lima, afilaba su guadaña.
The Devil rubbed his hands wild with joy while God was scratching his beard thoughtfully and grumpy. The Death was sharpening his scythe with a file.
-Señora, ¿a qué hora podría hacer este trabajito? –preguntó El Diablo a La Muerte.
“What time can you do this insignificant job, Madam ?”, The Devil asked the Death.
-Hoy por la mañana tengo varios casos pendientes, pero podría ser al mediodía o a la siesta. Quizá cuando el hombre este volviendo del trabajo…
“I have several pending cases this morning, but it could be at noon or nap. Maybe when this man is coming back from work...”
-Eso. Cuando regrese del trabajo me gustaría que lo interceptara. Trate de que parezca un accidente. Es mejor, así la opinión pública no me tira toda la bronca a mí.
“That's it. I’d like you to intercept him when he returns from work. Try to make it look like an accident. It’s better that way, so the public opinion won’t unleash all their fury on me”
Así lo haré –respondió
“I will”, she replied.
Y los tres se dispersaron. Dios ascendió y se perdió entre las nubes recorriendo su reino. El Diablo se transfiguró en un remolino de viento norte y se introdujo en las profundidades de la tierra. La Muerte, en la faz del planeta, se dispuso a realizar los trabajos pendientes.
And the three of them dispersed. God ascended and disappeared into the clouds travelling across his kingdom. The devil was transfigured on a north whirlwind and got into the depths of the earth. The Death, on the face of the planet, was ready to perform the task.
A las dos de la tarde, Rodolfo Sanabria salió del trabajo, agarró su bici y con un pedaleo tranquilo inició el regreso a casa. Debía pedalear alrededor de tres kilómetros hasta llegar al pueblo.
At two o'clock, Rodolfo Sanabria left from work, grabbed his bike and quietly started pedaling back home. He had to go for about three kilometers to the village.
La Muerte dispuso que en el momento exacto, en que el hombre pasara por la esquina de Tienda La Nena, por la calle perpendicular, aparecería un auto a toda velocidad para embestirlo y terminar con su vida. Lo había pensado todo. A esa hora hay poco tránsito en el pueblo, y por lo tanto el hombre vendría distraído, y al llegar a la esquina ya no tendría tiempo de nada.
The Death ruled that at the exact moment the man was passing through the corner of the Shop “The Girl”, a speeding car would suddenly appear from the cross-street and run over him ending his life. He had thought it all. At that time there was practically no traffic in the village, and thus, the distracted man wouldn’t have time to react when he reached the corner.
El gran edificio que ocupaba la tienda en esa precisa esquina, no le permitiría ver ni advertir la aproximación de vehículo alguno.
Pedaleaba tranquilo, sin imaginar el siniestro y fatal encuentro que le aguardaba a tan solo cinco cuadras de entrar al pueblo (…)
The large building where the shop was located in that intersection, wouldn’t allow him see or notice the approach of any vehicle.
He rode his bike quietly but never imagined the sinister and fatal encounter that was waiting for him just five blocks away, at the entrance of the the village (...)
